Aim

To develop a policy guideline on information for food sold online. The intent of the policy guideline is to clearly set out the expectation of food ministers regarding information that should be provided for food required to bear a label when this is sold online.

Leads

On behalf of the Food Regulation Standing Committee (FRSC), the lead for this activity is the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries.

Authorisation

At their July 2025 meeting, food ministers considered a policy paper about information for food sold online and supported FRSC to progress further work on the matter.

Status

Analysis of consultation submissions is underway to inform next steps.

Completed work

We held public consultation on the need for, and contents of, a policy guideline on information requirements for food sold online between 3 November–12 December 2025. Submissions will inform the development and content of the policy guideline and ministers’ decisions on whether to adopt the policy guideline.

We published a policy paper in July 2025 which explored the current situation and potential issues with the information available to consumers when purchasing food required to bear a label online.
